Digital Radiography
Our small animal department uses x-rays (radiographs) to diagnose a range of bone and joint disorders.
We can also use x-rays to visualise the structures within the head, chest and abdomen; use of contrast agents can help to hunt down foreign bodies in the gastrointestinal system and some bladder problems.
Ultrasonography
Ultrasound is used to further identify normal or abnormal soft tissue structures within the abdomen. Ultrasound can also be used to take biopsies from organs or masses within the body without having to go through a major operation to get to the area of interest.
We can use ultrasound for pregnancy diagnosis in bitches and other small animals.
At Oakham we can offer echocardiography (the use of ultrasound to visualise and measure the heart), this is a great help in diagnosing and monitoring dogs with heart disease. Included in this service we also have a visiting specialist in cardiology who is available to see some of our patients on an outpatient basis.
MRI - magnetic resonance imaging
We have access to MRI facilities at Oakham Vet Hospital for smaller dogs and cats; this is a step up from normal radiographs as soft tissue structures and bone can be seen at the same time. It is very useful for spinal disease and the diagnosis of tumours in the head and neck. We have a visiting specialist in neuro surgery who will look over MRI scans and also help with spinal surgeries.

Endoscopy

In domestic pets we can use endoscopy to have a look within the gut, starting either at the stomach (gastroscopy) to check for tumours, ulcers, to retrieve foreign bodies, or to visualise the large intestine. Endoscopy can also be used to take samples from within the gut without having to undergo a major operation.
Visualisation of the upper respiratory tract can also be undertaken with smaller scopes.
Laboratory
There is a well equipped in-house laboratory that is run by a full-time technician to provide reliable and prompt results.
A full range of haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, cytology and parasitology services are available.
Small Animal specific services are listed below:

• General health profiles
• Senior pet screening
