09-03-2010

GUM DISEASE IN DOGS - THE MOST COMMON DISEASE IN ADULT DOGS - CAN YOU SPOT THE WARNING SIGNS?

In association with Pedigree Dentacenta, Oakham Veterinary Hospital is offering a FREE dental check up for your dog during the month of March 2010.  4 out of 5 dogs, over the age of 3 years old, have gum disease, making it the most common disease in adult dogs.  Dental disease in pets is often overlooked and it is not easy to spot the signs. Checking your dog's mouth every day will really help and we strongly recommend that it gets checked on a yearly basis by a nurse or vet. . During the FREE dental check up, you will also be given a free care and brushing guide + a free pack of Pedigree Dentastix to take home.

Free dental check ups with a veterinary nurse are available at Oakham Veterinary Hospital throughout the year.

Common warning signs for gum disease in dogs are as follows:

  • Behaviour - at advanced stages of gum disease, he might find it difficult to chew and play ball, and can be reluctant to let you go near his mouth.
  • Bad Breath - Dogs will healthy teeth and gum will not have bad breath.  Bad breath is almost always a sign of underlying gum disease.
  • Bleeding Gums - When plaque bacteria attack the gums, the gum tissue will become inflamed and bleed.
